Mrs. Finch came in that morning. After Detective Castern’s visit, it was lovely to see her.

“Would you like to try one of my new daisy cupcakes?” Lauren asked.

Annie had already shown their friend to a four-seater near the counter and sat opposite her.

“I would love to, Lauren, dear.” Mrs. Finch beamed at them. Today she wore a blue skirt and cream blouse, her gray hair caught up in a slightly untidy bun.

“What would you like to drink?” Zoe’s eyes sparkled. “You must try our new pumpkin spice marshmallow mocha!”

“I can’t believe we forgot to tell you about it at craft club,” Lauren admitted.

“That’s because we had lots of other news,” Zoe reminded her.

“It sounds too tempting to resist.” Mrs. Finch smiled at the trio.

Lauren made the specialty drink, while Zoe plated the daisy cupcake.

They brought their friend’s order over to her.

“Something smells delicious.” Mrs. Finch gazed down at her mug; the micro foam decorated with chocolate powder.

“If you don’t like it, I’ll make you something else,” Lauren promised.

“I’m sure I’ll enjoy it,” Mrs. Finch told her. “And my, look at your new cupcake. It really is a work of art with those little white flowers with the yellow centers. It must have taken you a while to make them.”

“It did,” she admitted. Unfortunately, what had seemed fun yesterday afternoon experimenting with a new creation had translated into a little more work than she’d expected, with cutting out all the fondant flowers.

Lauren watched as Mrs. Finch took her first sip, holding the mug with wobbly hands.

“What an unusual flavor,” she praised. “But it’s very pleasing.”

“Thank you.” Lauren smiled.

“Brrt!”

“The pumpkin spice and marshmallows were Zoe’s ideas.”

“And adding the hot chocolate powder was Lauren’s.”

“You two – three—” she glanced at Annie “—are very creative.”

“Thanks.” Zoe looked pleased. “I’m going to make a new mug design soon.”

“Oh, what happened with the car you wanted to buy from the mechanic?” Mrs. Finch inquired. “Did you like the Zoe red color?”

Zoe launched into the story of deciding not to buy the car after all, finishing on an upbeat note about her upcoming honeymoon. “We can’t wait!” She grinned.

“I’m sure you two will have a lovely time. Lauren, what will you do while Zoe is on vacation?”

“I haven’t really thought about it,” she admitted, glancing at Annie. “I’m sure Annie and I can manage, and I know Ed will lend a hand serving customers if I need him to.”

“Brrt.” Good idea.

More customers entered. Lauren and Zoe made their apologies and returned to the counter, while Annie seated the newcomers, rejoining Mrs. Finch when she’d completed her hostess duties.

When Mrs. Finch finished her treats, Annie accompanied her to the register. “That was certainly delicious,” their friend praised. “I think your pumpkin spice coffee might be my new favorite.”

“Even better than a pot of tea?” Zoe teased gently.

“Perhaps.” Mrs. Finch nodded.

“Are you okay to walk home?” Lauren eyed their friend’s walking stick. “It’s no problem to drive you – it will only take a minute.”

“I’ll be fine, dear,” Mrs. Finch reassured her.
